If you’re like most people who work during the day, it’s likely that you are sitting on your butt all day long. One of the hot topics lately has been the dangers of sitting for long periods of time, with some people saying that it’s as deadly as smoking a couple of packs of cigarettes a day! Regardless of the truth behind those claims, we can all agree that sitting for a long time is not beneficial to your health. The more you move throughout the day, the better. FitBit Review: Get Up and MOVE!

What is the FitBit? It’s an activity tracker that, depending upon the model you purchase, tracks your movement. All models will track the number of steps that you take, and can tie to the FitBit smartphone app. If you don’t have a smartphone, you’re not out of luck; the FitBit can connect to your computer via USB and Bluetooth.

How the FitBit works

  1. Put the FitBit bracelet on.
  2. Go about your day, exercise, walk, run, etc.
  3. Sync your FitBit with your smartphone or computer.
  4. Review your data!

It’s really that simple. Depending on upon the model that you purchase, you can add on some fancy features, like checking your heart rate, keeping track of stairs that you have climbed, and sync it to your phone’s caller ID so you can see who’s calling you just by looking at your wrist.

You can also put you FitBit onto Sleep mode, which tracks your movements while you sleep. If you’re restless, your FitBit will know. The more you move, the less quality sleep you’re receiving. The next morning, the FitBit will show you what type of sleep you received, and you can begin to make adjustments to help improve your sleep. There’s a ton of great data that you can get, regardless of the model of FitBit you choose to purchase.

There are a few different models, all with different features and varying in price.

FitBit Flex: The Basic Model

I own this model, it’s great, basic, keeps track of steps and sleep. The only display it has are five dots that show how close you are to achieving your daily goal. I have mine set for 10,000 steps a day. If I don’t do any exercise that day, I’ll average about 3,000 steps which is really low. If by the time I get back home from the office I am still around 2,500 steps, I’ll be sure to get in a bunch more before it’s time to get to bed. I like to finish the day with no less than 7,000 steps. You can buy this FitBit on Amazon right now for less than $90.

This is the next one I’m likely to upgrade to. It keeps track of everything the FitBit Flex does, but it has a display which shows all of your data so you do not have to log into your app to check your progress. I like the feature that allows you to get call notifications right to your wrist! You can see all of your daily stats, works as a watch so it shows the time, steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, and active minutes. It tracks all the same info as the FitBit Flex, only it has a display that shows it right on your wrist. This is available for purchase on Amazon for a great price – less than $120 as of the date we are publishing this article.

This is another sexy model, since it does everything that the FitBit Charge does, PLUS keeps track of your heart rate. It allows you to set heart rate targets in case you want to stay within a certain range for exercising or training. It’s available on Amazon for less than $150.

Welcome to the granddaddy of fitness trackers. The FitBit Surge Fitness Superwatch has all the features that the previous trackers mentioned have listed, but has GPS tracking as well. If you want to see the distance you’ve traveled, keep track of the locations of your workouts, see elevation you’ve climbed, pacing, and more – the FitBit Surge is what you want.

This is an activity tracker that would work best for people who do physical activity in varying elevations, such as cyclists, mountain bikers, marathon and long distance runners, and hikers. The data that the Surge offers is pretty incredible. If you are just working out at the gym or in your neighborhood, this might be overkill for you, but is still pretty sweet to own if you can afford it. It’s available on Amazon for less than $250.

You can’t change anything without first knowing your stats. Owning a FitBit was one of the best things I did for my health, since it showed me how little I was actually moving throughout the day. The first step to change is awareness. Once you’re aware of your actual numbers it might be a shock to you. I highly encourage anyone who wants to change their health to own one of these activity trackers since it will get you to MOVE. If you’re looking to lose weight quickly, this is a no-brainer. You simply need to own one to get you on the road to health.
